June 1864 return says “Loss June 25 Nashville, Tenn. Died” [Note this return was filed in 100th USCT Misc files, rather than the normal CMSR file for the 100th. A descriptive roll is filed in the “Colored Troops - Unassigned Infantry” The Enlistment papers and Final Statement for the soldier were filed under “Colored Troops- Miscellaneous Personal Papers” ] Note written on Enlistment papers says “Pension Claim No. 291,035.” Final statement dated August 5, 1864 says “He died in General Hospital Number 16, Nashville, Tennessee on the 25th day of June 1864 by reason of Typhoid Fever.” He was never paid. A memo states: “This man died prior to the organization of Company K, 100th USCT or of the muster into service of 2nd Lieutenant Samuel McCarthy. He was consequently an unassigned recruit at the date of his death.”

Appears on Descriptive list of Deserters: Sept 29, 1865 from Camp Stone, Columbia, Tenn. “Deserted from camp 100 U.S.C.I. while a prisoner and under guard.” Sept 1865 return says “Deserted. Was sentenced by General Court Martial [at Kingston Springs, Tenn. Sept 14, 1865 under Lieutenant Col. Henry Stone 100th U.S.C.I.] to be confined at hard labor with ball and chain one year in Mil. Prison, Nashville, Tenn.” October 1865 return says “Gain. October 1, 1865 Columbia, Tenn. from desertion.” November 1865 return says “Absent in arrest or confinement Nashville, Tenn. since November 1, 1865.” Mustered out Dec 26, 1865. Last paid to Apr 30, 1865 prior to that date. Court Martial charges were 1. Disobedience of Orders and 2. Larceny. He was found guilty of both. Private Charles Frazier was requested as a witness in the trial. According to General Order No. 7, the actual sentence was “to be confined in such military prison as the proper authority may designate for a period of one year.”
