Nov-Dec 1864 roll says “absent sick Genl. Hosp. Chattanooga, Tenn. since December 26, 1864.” Present on subsequent rolls. Mustered out December 26, 1865. Prior to that date the soldier had last been paid to April 30, 1865.[Two soldiers of this same name enlisted the same day and were enrolled in the same company. The only difference on record was their height, name, and slave owner. Their CMSRs seem to have been combined into a single file within the 100th USCI, but they are two separate soldiers. It appears that the 18-year-old, taller John was the one who is referred to as “1st” on the rolls.]
