Nature of work done before enlistment: farmer
Enslaver, if known/ or whether a free man: Lucien B. Goggin of Washington, Mason County, Ky submitted a compensation claim received on January 12, 1867 which stated “I inherited this negro from my mother and owned him ten years before the war and he was worth at least five hundred dollars.” Benedict Kirk and Edward L. Gault of Mason County witnessed his claim, and attested that this soldier had been worth “at least five hundred dollars” before the war. His attorney was J.C. Campbell. Military Service Notes:
[A note in the “Miscellaneous personal records” for this soldier, alongside the “compensation claim” of his enslaver says that he was transferred to the 100th USCI, Company G, which is very likely considering his original date and place of enlistment, but I was unable to find a scan of his records with that company. It could be that his name is changed there, or spelled differently. Perhaps his enlistment details and physical description could be compared against soldiers in the company.]
