[According to his
enlistment papers, this soldier mustered into the 26th U.S.C.T., but
descriptive roll and enlistment papers are on file in the 20th USCT.
Neither regiment's record contains any further information about this
soldier. There were several other people named Henry Johnson in both
regiments and while the descriptive roll is clear, some of the
monthly returns in the 20th USC files might belong to this soldier.
One would need to first determine that they don't belong to the other
same-named soldiers in that regiment.]

Appears on the
Hospital Muster Roll for the No. 11 U.S.A. General Hospital at
Nashville, Tennessee as of July 1, 1864. Died July 10, 1864 of Small
Pox. He was unmarried. His effects were destroyed to prevent
contagion. He was buried at Pest Hospital Cemetery. [Note that the
description of this soldier in his CMSR file for the 100th USCI is
incorrect; a copyist appears to have switched his descriptive entry
for that of another William Johnson from the same regiment who was
younger (23) and came from a different county (Harrison), enlisted in
Covington, Ky. It is possible to distinguish the two because the
younger William survived. The mis-copied descriptive information for
this younger William Johnson stayed in this older William H.
Johnson's file and from there was copied again onto the final
statements for this soldier after he died. For William H. Johnson's
correct description you have to go back to the original which is
filed in the CMSR for William H. Johnson in the Unassigned USCI,
which was where this soldier was enlisted before he was transferred
to the 100th along with the other younger William Johnson. William
H.'s age of 28 is correctly given on his hospital record of “Death
and Interment” within his Final Statements; presumably they asked
him his age directly sometime before he died.]
