A list of soldiers born in Mason County, Kentucky who enlisted in United States Colored Civil War regiments. The most common regiments Mason County-born soldiers enlisted in were the 100th U.S. Colored Infantry, the 13th U.S. Colored Heavy Artillery (formerly the 121st U.S. Colored Infantry), and, if the soldiers had first escaped across the Ohio river, the 27th U.S. Colored Infantry. Many other regiments are represented in smaller numbers as well.

Where is Mason County... Where is "Greenupsburg"?
Mason County, Kentucky, founded in 1788, lies along the border of the Ohio River, south of Brown County and Adams County, Ohio.
"Map of Kentucky highlighting Mason County" by David Benbennick - The maps use data from nationalatlas.gov, specifically countyp020.tar.gz on the Raw Data Download page. The county seat of Maysville, where many soldiers hailed from or enlisted, is situated along the northern edge of the county, along the river.
Today Maysville also incorporates the former town of Washington, KY. Washington, KY is known for being the place Harriet Beecher (later Stowe) visited where she witnessed the horrifying auction of enslaved women, men and children that further inspired her abolitionist book, Uncle Tom's Cabin. The Harriet Beecher Stowe Slavery to Freedom Museum in Old Washington, KY (in Maysville) may still be visited today.
Another common place of enlistment is Greenupsburg, KY. Greenupsburg is now called Greenup, and it was established as the county seat of Greenup County, KY, which is two counties east of Mason County.

Finding Your Civil War Ancestors: Service Records
What is a CMSR? It stands for Compiled Military Service Record. The National Archives in Washington, D.C. keeps these and has microfilmed them. Several fee-based organizations have since scanned them and digitized at least some of the descriptive information.
Anatomy of a CMSR
CMSR's include bi-monthly rolls and sometimes loose "returns" stating a soldier's status or orders. If the soldier died, they may include a set of documents called "Final Statements" mostly from the hospital. They may contain "Compensation Claims" from a former enslaver hoping to be reimbursed for the loss of an enlisted slave. They may include enlistment papers. They generally include a descriptive roll slip, summarizing the vital information for each soldier.
Where to find the CMSR's online
The two main sites I use are Ancestry.com, for searching Colored Artillery, Cavalry, and Infantry Regiments numbered 1-55. For Infantry Regiments numbered 56-138, I use Fold3.com. Fold3 covers the lower numbered regiments as well, but only the soldier's name can be searched, as opposed to several other details like age, enlistment date and origin on Ancestry.com. As of now at least, the Ancestry.com searchable data does not include the higher-numbered regiments. Each regiment has lettered companies, A-Z, and the companies are large.
Most of the Civil War enlistees in these regiments were between the ages of 16 and 35, and they enlisted mostly in 1863 and 1864. So you are looking for male ancestors born between 1828-1848. In many instances people were just estimating their ages though, so this is all very rough. I dismissed a few ancestors whom I had thought were too young to enlist and found later that they had. So in the 1870 census, these ancestors are going to be 22-42 years old and in the 1880 census they are going to be 32-52, again just roughly.

Finding Your Civil War Ancestors: Getting started
A good first step following a branch of the family tree is to work your way back through the censuses. I use the census to find out names of parents and siblings of my known ancestors. With the full names and approximate birth dates of parents I can better search for them and identify them as children in earlier censuses. With the names of siblings, I can search for birth, marriage and death certificates that might provide (or verify) more accurate names of parents or a more specific place of parents' origin. So first, find your mother, grandmother or great-grandmother in the census. It is best to start with a relative born before 1930 if you can, because generally the later censuses aren't digitized and made public on many sites yet.
One free site that I find quite helpful at this stage is familysearch.org
While you are there, it is a good site to start building a family tree on.
Once you find her, note her parents' names. Now, try to find her parents in earlier censuses, before she was born. If her mother's name is Emily, and Emily goes by a married name, look for a marriage license record for Emily and her husband. Look for a birth record for one of Emily's children. Look at Emily's death certificate. Look at the death certificates of all of Emily's children. Any of these records might give you Emily's maiden name. Once you have it, move on to finding Emily's parents.
Once you identify your relatives in the 1870 census you have gone as far as the Federal Censuses will probably take you directly. From now on, you will be hitching rides on other documentation. Not all African Americans were counted in the 1870 census (or any census), so you might not make it all the way with every family line, even knowing names and where they lived.

Enslaved Ancestors' Names
If you are potentially a descendant of an African American enslaved in Northern Kentucky before the Civil War, please browse this list of soldiers to see if any of them share a last name with one of your ancestors. Though your ancestor may not be the soldier, a soldier may have been a relative or may have been enslaved on the same estate. Keep in mind that only men of a certain age group were eligible to enlist; your ancestor could easily have been a sister, younger or older sibling, or cousin of a soldier. These counties aren't huge. If you share a last name and a close county of origin, you might be well on your way to a connection.
One of my U.S. Civil War ancestors had a common first name, George, and his last name was misspelled such that I would never have recognized it. We had his name as George Gans, but in the military, he was listed as George Gautz. While searching for George, I came upon another soldier named Reuben Gants, which caught my eye because "Reuben" is a common family first name. So I followed Reuben back to his regiment and the George closest to him turned out to be my ancestor. How do I know for sure? (a subject for another exciting blog entry...)
Spellings of Soldiers' Names
Spellings of soldiers' names are pretty arbitrary. Of the enlistment records I transcribed, not one bears an actual soldier's signature. The spelling of the names is based on the way the soldier spoke his name at the enlistment site. In later records during the war, the returns and rolls were filled out by copyists who also made judgment calls as to how to spell a soldier's name. Spellings changed from copyist to copyist.
My advice: Say the name aloud. Say it with your best regional accent. Mumble it. Try to imagine how a person might hear such a name. Sometimes middle names and last names are heard as a single name. For example, "Thomas Wood Forman," the name of my ancestor's enslaver, was transcribed on one pension document as Tom Woodfirmin.
Another little thing to mention is that modern transcriptions of Civil War service records are often gleaned only from the first iteration of the name as it is written on the cover of a file, rather than within the file. We modern transcribers sometimes have trouble with the old-style calligraphy. "ss" is often written as "ps" or as something that looks like a "B" with a tail. The letters m,n, and u are completely interchangeable, as are "o", "a" and "u" sometimes. The capitals "L" "Q" and "S" can get pretty fancy. Capital "I" and "J" are interchangeable, even in the same hand. But if you stare hard enough and see enough iterations, you start to work it out.
Nicknames of Enslavers
By now you have probably noted that lots of names were abbreviated in the mid 1800's. William is Wm. Jonathan is Jno. or Jack, Charles is Chas., Christopher is Kit., and George is Geo.
Many formerly enslaved soldiers referred to their masters using familiar forms of the names. Arthur might be called "Art," Thomas called "Tom". Just as we are accustomed to hearing enslaved people's names in their short and informal forms, like "Bess," enslavers also are referred to in this way in the transcribed oral interviews in pension files or in a note on an enlistment form. It was conversely very common to give a middle name of an enslaver. This is probably because the names recurred so commonly within slaver families in Northern Kentucky. There might be five James Wiltons in the extended family alive at the same time, so one might be called Jimmy S. Wilton and another might be called Jamie Marshal Wilton, etc.
Last names
Contrary to what I had always learned prior to this project, it does appear that for the usual practical reasons, slaves in this Northern Kentucky county had last names. The names seem to most frequently come from either the enslaver of one's father or from one's current enslaver. Sometimes a soldier would enlist under his current enslaver's name, with his father's name as his middle name or initial, and then sometimes switch to the use of the father's name on the rolls. If you see a middle name or initial on a soldier, definitely treat it as a breadcrumb leading to something.
If you are looking for Alfred Jones, and you see a soldier named Alfert J. Wilson, it could be the same person. "Alfert" probably does not have the "J." for vanity reasons. But you will need to check around a bit more to determine who he is.

Family: Mother: Caroline Bean; Ms. Bean applied for pension July 26, 1890, but a note says “Fraudulent” [however, keep in mind that the use of different names at enlistment and the similarities between names, with an illiterate population of soldiers and family members makes this process very confusing. It is always possible that fraud was not intentional, and that the applicant was the mother of a soldier, if not this one.]
